  • In the late 60s, the Mexican government encouraged mass tourism to earn foreign currency; since it grew much faster than exports, thus the idea for Cancún was born, whose founding dates back to 1970
  • Cancun began formal operations in 1974
  • In 1973, the Cancun International Airport was opened, and some airlines were operating regularly
  • The first hotel to be built was Playa Blanca, at Km 3.5 on Boulevard Kukulcan, by Engineer Diego de la Peña. It began operating in 1974 with 42 luxury rooms

El Rey Ruins, the only Mayan ruins in the Hotel Zone. Inside, a niche was found where supposedly the sculpture of a crowned head of Mayan royalty was placed.

Malecon Americas, a shopping complex in a casual atmosphere among local people. Here you’ll find luxury department stores, movie theaters and restaurants

El Meco, 7 km from Cancun downtown, was an archaeological site of the pre-Columbian Maya culture.
