Cancun Traffic Regulations Road Safety Chapter XII HELPING OUR VISITORS
Article 152. - The municipal government has implemented a courtesy driving offense ticket which will be used exclusively for tourists who break minor city traffic laws. The purpose of this ticket is to show the visitor which traffic offense he/she committed and ask them to comply with local laws in the future. There is no charge whatsoever. The courtesy ticket may be issued twice to the same car and/or driver but will not be used in case of serious breaches of local traffic regulations and acts of dangerous driving.
Article 153.- All members of the City Highway Police department must help visitors as they drive around Cancun. When asked, they should provide drivers with information to find streets, offices, hotels and so on and give them instructions to get to majors roads and junctions that will facilitate their journey in and around the city.
PROTECT YOUR LIFE AND THAT OF OTHER MOTORISTS. PLEASE RESPECT THE SPEED LIMITS; ALWAYS FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELT.
A speed limit of 40 km/hr (25mph) is strictly enforced in the busiest areas of the Hotel Zone where pedestrians are most likely to be crossing the road and it is 70 km/hr (43mph) in the remaining areas. Please check the highways signs especially as you drive through the Hotel Zone and do not exceed the speed limit.
If the police pull you over for speeding, they must give you a warning. Please show the officers your car rental agreement and drivers’ license. Do not give them money. They cannot take you to the police station unless you are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Please write down the name of the police officer, day, hour, place and patrol number and give this information to the manager at your resort.
SPEED BUMPS When travel through residential areas of Cancun and villages en route to Chichén Itzá and Mérida (Highway 180) and Tulum (Highway 307) and other roads in the region, look out for speed bumps or sleeping policemen at the entrance and exit to the communities and in front of schools. There may be a road sign marking the location of the speed bumps but as it is often very close to the ramp, you should reduce your speed anyway. Similarly, patrol cars may park in the vicinity of villages on the lookout for speeders so please for your safety abide by the rules and keep within the speed limits.
